The theme of our letter this year is Gratitude. We have so many things to be grateful for in 2019. We recently celebrated our 13^th year in Richardson. We can say with pride that it has been a wonderful year for us and for the Richardson community. We continue to celebrate being chosen for the 2010 Dallas Business Journal Ethics Award.

We are most grateful for all of the support within our community and for all of the precious referrals from our Loveable Patients.

We have celebrated many weddings, engagements, new babies and vacations with our patients, friends and families throughout this year. We have shared sad occasions, as well, throughout all of this we have continued to have wonderful success stories of the happiness our patients’ Loveable smiles have given them. Mouth Restoration Helps Grandson Move Forward In Life Again

It’s been said that a grandchild fills a space in the heart that you never knew was empty.

This is certainly true for one of our patients who has helped her grandson with extensive dental work here at Loveable Smiles. A full mouth restoration for her grandson has been life changing for this young man.

To protect identities, we’ll refer to this precious grandmother as J.P.

It had been such a long time since J.P.’s grandson had been to the dentist, that he was afraid and embarrassed to go.

Additionally, due to his dental situation, he had a hard time eating and was embarrassed by his mouth.

He didn’t smile, he didn’t show his teeth and J.P. says her grandson’s lack of self-confidence was the cause of his struggle to find direction and move forward in life.

Every hour, of every day one American dies of oral cancer.

It is assumed that Oral Cancer is mainly a disease of older people, contracted after a lifetime of smoking and drinking.

But things are changing and Dr. Korenman is seeing an increase in Oral Cancer in patients of all ages and lifestyles.

Don’t feel immune because you don’t smoke or drink.

Dentists are often the first line of defense against oral cancer, through the process of early discovery. They help find cancer at its earliest stage, when the chances for successful treatment are highest.

An Oral Cancer Screening takes less than 15 minutes and should be a part of everyone’s annual health appointments.

Dr. Korenman uses the ViziLite Plus, which is a 5-minute test that uses fluorescent light to help dentists spot abnormal changes in the mucous membranes that line the inside of the mouth and throat.

Additionally, Dr. Korenman will go over the patient’s medical history, check for any discolorations (red spots, white spots, ulcers etc) and/or abnormal lumps around the oral tissues (cheeks, hard palate, tongue, floor of the mouth, back of throat etc), face and neck.

We simply use a 2×2 gauze, mirror and a special light to inspect the oral/pharyngeal area. We will palpitate/massage the neck and throat area to check for any abnormal lumps (checking the Thyroid area as well).

The entire screening takes less than 15 minutes and is completely painless.

Father’s Day Dental Care Tips for Dads

If you’re the man of the house, you probably think that dental health is the last thing on your priority list. Today’s dads are busy with their careers, kid’s (or grandkid’s) activities and “Honey Do” lists.

However, if you want to be healthy for your family, you must take care of your teeth.

Dr. Mayo of Mayo Clinic has explained, “Having a healthy mouth can add 10 years to your life.”

Medication
Does dad take any kind of heart medication including blood pressure or cholesterol meds?

These medications are notorious for causing dry mouth and inhibiting salivary flow. The flow of saliva is crucial for washing away the germs that cause cavities, so dry mouth is bacteria’s playground!

Dad should have regular checkups to manage his Dry Mouth symptoms, chew sugarless gum and swish with water on a regular basis.

Diabetes
Is dad Diabetic?

The statistics about Diabetes and dental care are startling:

Uncontrolled Type II Diabetics are at a higher risk for gum disease.
Severe gum disease can affect blood sugar.
Diabetics have a decreased ability to fight bacteria that invade the gums.
Medication can cause dry mouth which can cause soreness, ulcers, infections and cavities.
A dry mouth can exacerbate the side effects of diabetes, which will then lead to an increase in glucose levels, wreaking havoc on the body.
Having a dry mouth, especially as a diabetic, can lead to rampant tooth decay, which means blood sugar increases as the body tries, and fails, to fight infection.
Sometimes if the blood glucose levels are higher than they should be, the result is dry mouth.

Once again, it’s important to maintain regular dental care appointments to avoid the inflammation, gum disease and decay that can be caused by Diabetes and medication.

Is Dad Missing Teeth? Here’s the Dangerous Domino Effect

An estimated 30 million American adults live with one or more missing teeth. (That’s one out of every 4 drivers on the road.)

Is your dad or husband one of them?

A missing tooth has a dangerous domino effect on his mouth.

When natural teeth are removed there is additional damage which goes well beyond the surface of the gums.

The bone that once supported and surrounded those roots starts to deteriorate painlessly.
Other teeth start to shift.
If you are missing a bottom tooth, the top tooth that chews on it is going to drift down.
The teeth on either side of a missing tooth will slowly start to lean into that gap.
