After I got out of the Army, I wanted to do something in the medical/dental field but wasn’t sure what. One night my father (who was my childhood hero) decided he didn’t want to eat his favorite meal because his mouth hurt. He had severe periodontal disease and within the next few months lost all his teeth due to bone loss and infection. During that whole process I watched my father lose a lot of weight and he became very weak and sick. I began to understand that a person’s oral health affects the whole body and most individuals have no idea how important the mouth is. I decided then that I wanted to become an agent of change and help patients with their oral health to hopefully keep them from experiencing what my father did.
