Father’s Day Dental Care Tips for Dads

If you’re the man of the house, you probably think that dental health is the last thing on your priority list. Today’s dads are busy with their careers, kid’s (or grandkid’s) activities and “Honey Do” lists.

However, if you want to be healthy for your family, you must take care of your teeth.Attentive Man

Dr. Mayo of Mayo Clinic has explained, “Having a healthy mouth can add 10 years to your life.”

Medication
Does dad take any kind of heart medication including blood pressure or cholesterol meds?

These medications are notorious for causing dry mouth and inhibiting salivary flow. The flow of saliva is crucial for washing away the germs that cause cavities, so dry mouth is bacteria’s playground!

Dad should have regular checkups to manage his Dry Mouth symptoms, chew sugarless gum and swish with water on a regular basis.

Diabetes
Is dad Diabetic?

The statistics about Diabetes and dental care are startling:diabatic man

  1. Uncontrolled Type II Diabetics are at a higher risk for gum disease.
  2. Severe gum disease can affect blood sugar.
  3. Diabetics have a decreased ability to fight bacteria that invade the gums.
  4. Medication can cause dry mouth which can cause soreness, ulcers, infections and cavities.
  5. A dry mouth can exacerbate the side effects of diabetes, which will then lead to an increase in glucose levels, wreaking havoc on the body.
  6. Having a dry mouth, especially as a diabetic, can lead to rampant tooth decay, which means blood sugar increases as the body tries, and fails, to fight infection.
  7. Sometimes if the blood glucose levels are higher than they should be, the result is dry mouth.

Once again, it’s important to maintain regular dental care appointments to avoid the inflammation, gum disease and decay that can be caused by Diabetes and medication.

Dental Coward
We know dads have a reputation for being the “tough guy” but even “tough guys” can dread visiting the dentist. Many men have had bad experiences at the dentist and understandably avoid dental exams.

Dr. Korenman and his staff understand dental fear and they are dedicated to reversing the trend of miserable dental experiences. He will never cause his patients pain and he listens to all of their concerns.

If it’s been some time or even a long time since dad’s last appointment, we want him to know that we never will scold him or make him feel guilty because we are just glad to see him.

We are here to serve our patients for a healthy future.

Please schedule Dad’s Total Health Dental Appointment by calling 972-231-0585.

Is Dad Missing Teeth? Here’s the Dangerous Domino Effect

An estimated 30 million American adults live with one or more missing teeth. (That’s one out of every 4 drivers on the road.)

Is your dad or husband one of them?man missing tooth

A missing tooth has a dangerous domino effect on his mouth.

When natural teeth are removed there is additional damage which goes well beyond the surface of the gums.

  • The bone that once supported and surrounded those roots starts to deteriorate painlessly.
  • Other teeth start to shift.
  • If you are missing a bottom tooth, the top tooth that chews on it is going to drift down.
  • The teeth on either side of a missing tooth will slowly start to lean into that gap.
  • When teeth don’t line up right, they don’t have the proper stress distributions, so they are getting overworked and over-stressed which causes them to be at risk or lost as well.

The bad news is that you don’t feel this domino effect.  Unfortunately, over time this misalignment can make it difficult to keep your teeth clean which can contribute to cavities and gum disease.

Imagine a brick archway. photo brick archway

If you take a brick out of an archway and come back in a year, you won’t be able to put that brick back in its place because everything has settled a bit.

Perhaps the archway hasn’t fallen down, but it’s certainly not going to last as long as the arch with all the bricks in place.

When you have multiple missing teeth, bone reabsorption occurs, which causes the face to collapse. These changes can become so severe they make the person look many years older than they actually are.

Dr. Korenman of Loveable Smiles can help with dental implants to replace missing teeth.

The advancements in dental implants over the years are life changing.

Simply stated, dental implants reconnect people with what they’ve lost. Youth. Self-esteem. Confidence. Function. Happiness. The joy of kissing!

Dental implants look natural, produce a beautiful smile, and allow you to eat, speak and function as you did when your mouth was healthy.

Only 12% of general dentists in the US place implants. 5% of those use the most updated form of technology.

Dr. Korenman has that technology.11002620_861074030601651_865004048774769856_n

He has invested in NewTom VG3 Dental CAT-scan which allows Dr. Korenman to view an anatomically accurate 3D image of your mouth. It provides the most comprehensive and accurate information required to determine your bone quantity and quality for possible dental implants. If teeth have been missing for some time he can see how much bone loss has occurred and determine what type of bone grafting may be needed.

With Dental CT scanning, implant procedures can be planned in detail before any surgery takes place. This means virtually no surprises when Dr. Korenman performs surgery.

With the advances in implant dentistry now available from Loveable Smiles, dad can soon be eating what he wants, when he wants, and where he wants.

His facial muscle tone will be restored. He’ll put 20 years of life back in his smile.

For more information, please call Loveable Smiles in Richardson at (972) 231-0585 and schedule your dad or husband a complimentary consultation.

7 year old receives Frenectomy for Upper Lip Tie in Richardson, TX Dallas/Ft. Worth

Today my 7 year old daughter Lauren had an upper lip frenectomy at Loveble Smiles in Richardson.  She has a gap in her two front teeth and it is our hope that by removing the flap of skin under her upper lip, and as her adult teeth come in, that will help to close the gap. She may still have to have some orthodontic work, but by performing the frenectomy now, that will allow for more “shifting” of her teeth as her permanent teeth grow in. IMG_20170410_101639240

Dr. Korenman is known as the “Listening Dentist” and I would also say he is the “Gently Explains” dentist.

He took the time to talk about and demonstrate each step of the procedure to put my daughter at ease. He showed her the cool water that comes out of the Biolase laser and the red “laser light.”

I think all of this explanation and Dr. Korenman’s gentle nature helped my daughter to remain calm during the entire procedure.

It was fascinating to watch and I’m thankful Dr. Korenman has invested in the latest dental technology to be able to conduct these types of services painlessly.IMG_20170410_103625575

Thank you Dr. Korenman for taking great care of my daughter!IMG_20170410_103055831_HDRIMG_20170410_101738969

Already a patient? Bring in someone new and your exam will also be free!

Every hour, of every day one American dies of oral cancer.

It is assumed that Oral Cancer is mainly a disease of older people, contracted after a lifetime of smoking and drinking.

But things are changing and Dr. Korenman is seeing an increase in Oral Cancer in patients of all ages and lifestyles.

Despite the common risk factors, EVERYONE is at risk REGARDLESS of their risk factors.

Dentists are often the first line of defense against oral cancer, through the process of early discovery. They help find cancer at its earliest stage, when the chances for successful treatment are highest.

An Oral Cancer Screening takes less than 15 minutes and should be a part of everyone’s annual health appointments.

Dr. Korenman uses the ViziLite Plus, which is a 5-minute test that uses fluorescent light to help dentists spot abnormal changes in the mucous membranes that line the inside of the mouth and throat.

Additionally, Dr. Korenman will go over the patient’s medical history, check for any discolorations (red spots, white spots, ulcers etc) and/or abnormal lumps around the oral tissues (cheeks, hard palate, tongue, floor of the mouth, back of throat etc), face and neck.

We simply use a 2×2 gauze, mirror and a special light to inspect the oral/pharyngeal area. We will palpitate/massage the neck and throat area to check for any abnormal lumps (checking the Thyroid area as well).

The entire screening takes less than 15 minutes and is completely painless.

Missing Teeth & Bone Loss Will Age You

When teeth are lost the damage goes well below the surface of the gums.dental implant before after face structure

The bone that once supported and surrounded the roots of those teeth starts to deteriorate painlessly.

When bone resorption occurs, it causes the face to collapse. These changes can become so severe they make the person look many years older than they actually are.

The more missing teeth, the quicker and more severe the bone loss. For those missing all or most of their natural teeth, bone loss can become so severe within just a few years it can become difficult to wear removable devices such as partials and dentures. There is simply little bone left to support them.

Dental Implants: A Solid & Permanent Foundation

It’s so vital to replace the tooth root with a dental implant which becomes integrated in the bone, and thus, preserves it.

The bone forms a bond to the implants which then function as natural tooth roots – providing a solid and permanent foundation for biting and chewing.

The implants have no sensation in your mouth, you do not notice their presence at all and your mouth feels very natural and comfortable.

Dr. Korenman of Loveable Smiles has invested in the advanced technology of a dental CAT-scan x-ray machine that provides 3-D information including whether there is enough bone for long-term function and stability, the location of nerves, and sinuses and helps determine if implants can be placed safely and predictably.
With the advances in implant dentistry now available from Loveable Smiles, you can soon be eating what you want, when you want and where you want.

Dental Truths and Myths: Silver fillings don’t need to be replaced.

Quite often Dr. Korenman hears the following and very common dental myth:dental-fillings-350x350

“Silver fillings don’t need to be replaced.”

One of the most hotly debated issues among dentists these days is whether or not old, silver amalgam fillings in the mouths of so many Americans are safe.

Silver fillings, also known as dental amalgam, are a mixture of liquid (elemental) mercury and a powdered alloy composed of silver, tin and copper. In fact, there is more mercury than any other metal so they should be called “mercury fillings” rather than “silver fillings” but who would allow mercury to be put into their body?

Primary Fears About Mercury

Many people claim mercury leeches out over time from these silver fillings – more if you drink hot liquids and chew gum or grind your teeth and they are concerned about dangerous levels of mercury vapors leading to mercury toxicity.

Some people claim that mercury has been linked to autoimmune diseases, neurological issues, chronic diseases and even mental disorders.

The FDA did a long-term study proving that amalgam is not dangerous when used as a filling in teeth. Science has proved that the mercury in fillings do not cause these diseases; however, amalgam does pose a huge problem in teeth.

The Real Danger with Silver Fillings

Teeth and fillings expand and contract at different rates.  Over many years of ingesting hot and then cold food and drink, the fillings experience expansion and contraction. The contraction creates openings between the tooth and the filling material. The expansion can contribute to the tooth cracking or worse, splitting. Dr. Korenman has even seen a large part of a tooth break off with the metal filling still completely intact.

Additionally, when you chew and your teeth come together there’s a lot of pressure and force at work, and the metal filling takes the brunt of that pressure…which can also lead to the tooth being fractured much like a log being split.

When the seal between the tooth and the filling breaks down, food particles and decay-causing bacteria work their way between the worn filling and the tooth. These bacteria cannot be removed with a toothbrush or by any other means, and decay may develop along the edge of the filling or underneath it.

broken_filling_1

Broken filling.

The most frustrating part of all this is that it happens painlessly with very few signs of a problem. We use high magnification to detect these openings between the filling and the tooth structure and with the intraoral cameras we use, you can see this yourself on the photographs.

Technology for those “unseen” spaces

When we look into our mouths, only a small portion of the surface area of our teeth and gums is visible.

Dr. Korenman of Loveable Smiles has invested in the latest dental technology that allows him and his team to see things that normally go undetected. Using the NewTom VG3 Dental CAT-scan Dr. Korenman is able to obtain limitless, 3D views including between the teeth, under the gums, in the bones and even nerve canals and sinuses can be seen. This allows Dr. K to completely diagnose and provide full treatment options.

Additionally, Dr. Korenman has invested in CEREC Technology which uses ceramic materials to restore your teeth to their natural strength, beauty, and function. The best thing about CEREC, is that your teeth can be restored in one visit to the dentist. Your crown is designed and milled right here in our office!  A few years ago, you had to visit the dentist 3 or 4 or even more times in order to perform teeth restoration.  The technology saves a lot of time for our patients.

We invite you to call Loveable Smiles for your dental CAT scan and Total Health Dental appointment at 972-231-0585
